Process or sub-process without a start event

The check bpmnlint/start-event-required, in the group Modelling rules.

Why it matters

Without a start event there is no way to start the process.

How to fix it

Add a start event.

Where you see it

The editor puts a marker on the element while you draw, and the Problems tab of the sidebar lists it under Rules, with the rule name bpmnlint/start-event-required. In a terminal, penstock check --only rules reports it.

To change how strict this rule is, set start-event-required to error, warn or off in your .bpmnlintrc. See Validation.
